It has been a tough time for us Greengrocers the last couple of months. The weather has not been on our side around the globe and things do not seem to be getting better any time soon. On top of weather issues, we also have the usual change of seasons happening. A perfect storm they could say. Availability on key lines has been extremely difficult and the market is volatile. We are doing everything we can to navigate this difficult situation.
Let’s discuss some positives and take advantage of supporting British Produce wherever possible! English Raspberries and Blackberries have started from Hugh Lowe farm in Maidstone now, alongside the stunning Strawberries we have been getting. There is only a limited amount of time left before the English Asparagus season ends. The season is always relatively short but oh so sweet and we have loved the quality of the produce we have been getting from our grower in Rogate, Hampshire.
A few problem products to be cautious of are Cauliflowers, the new season started after a gap in the market but unfortunately availability is short and quality not up to scratch. Plums are tasting a little on the sour side so Peaches, Nectarines and Apricots are a lovely alternative for Stone Fruit for the time being. Parsnips are pricey whilst we wait to transition over the Spanish season as English has now completely finished.
